Westerly Hospital has taken delivery of 68 new, state-of-the-art Stryker Medical beds. The new beds, funded through philanthropy, have replaced existing beds in the Hospital’s Medical Care Unit (MCU), Surgical Care Unit (SCU), and Intensive Care unit (ICU).
The MCU and SCU “Stryker S3” beds come equipped with pressure relieving mattresses and retractable frames which aid in the protection of a patient’s skin in the prevention of bedsores. The beds also feature an industry exclusive “Chaperone Bed Exit System” technology that is based on a patient’s center of gravity, and which helps to alert caregivers if a patient attempts to get out of bed without assistance.
In the ICU, the “InTouch” beds provide Hospital caregivers with a foot-end, touch screen interface using a powerful on-bed computer. The InTouch beds also come equipped with pre-recorded clinical phrases in twelve languages to help Hospital caregivers communicate with limited English proficiency patients. On-board “Sound Therapy” also allows caregivers to play music or nature sounds as part of a soothing environment. The Westerly Hospital is the first hospital in Rhode Island to purchase the Stryker “InTouch” critical care bed.
“We are extremely grateful for the philanthropic funds that allowed us to purchase these new beds,” said Paula Miller, Director, Nursing Process. “The Stryker beds will allow the Westerly Hospital to provide for more comfortable patient stays, deliver the highest quality patient care, and are consistent with our Patient and Family Centered Model of Care.”
Nicholas Stahl, Executive Director, The Westerly Hospital Foundation, also expressed his gratitude to the Westerly Hospital Auxiliary, Tim Horton’s, The Forrest & Frances Lattner Foundation, and donors to the Hospital’s Annual Fund for their generous contributions which made possible the purchase of the new Stryker beds.
